Governor General Jeanne Sauvé has appointed Dr. Kenneth G. McMillan, Director of Church Relations for the Christian humanitarian organization, World Vision Canada, a Member of the Order of Canada.
The Order of Canada was established in 1967 as a means of recognizing outstanding achievement and honouring those who have given service to Canada, to their fellow citizens or to humanity at large. An Advisory Council, under the Chairmanship of the chief Justice of Canada has the responsibility of recommending appointments to the Governor General who is Chancellor and Principal Companion of the Order. The Queen of Canada is the Sovereign of the Order. The Constitution of the Order limits the number who may be appointed to the Order. By restricting membership, the high standards of admission are maintained and the prestige of the Order safeguarded.
The Insignia of a Member of the Order is provided in the form of a Badge, a Miniature, Undress Ribbon and Lapel Badge. The motto of the Order of Canada is Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam (They desire a better country). Members of the Order are permitted to write after their names the letters “CM”.
Some months after the announcement of the appointment to the Order of Canada, the new Members are invited to an Investiture ceremony at Government House in Ottawa where they receive the Badge of the Order from the hands of the Governor General and are guests at a reception to mark the occasion.
Dr. McMillan, one of Canada’s highly regarded Christian leaders, over the course of his ministry, has received many honours including three Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degrees. He was elected Moderator of The Presbyterian Church in Canada in 1979. (Dr. McMillan is the only Minister of The Presbyterian Church in Canada who has been awarded Membership in the Order of Canada.) He served as General Secretary of the Canadian Bible Society for over twenty-six years. Since October 1983 he has been Director of Church Relations for World Vision Canada which has major relief and development programs in some eighty countries.
