I very much appreciated the article in the 1990 Channels by P. Gordon Reid entitled “Family Worship.” It has been passed on to several friends and read aloud to our family (my wife Alison and four small children).

The account of the daily routine of Donald Reid was very moving. It both convicted me for my lack of personal devotion and discipline as well as strangely warmed my heart It has given me hope and brought back memories of another Christian family (I was raised in a home where neither parent was a believer) who were instrumental in shaping and grounding my early faith in Christ. As a high school student I often slept over and participated in their morning family devotions.

Mr. Reid makes the poignant observation that even in his youth their daily morning practice was in general decline. He readily admits that it has vanished in his generation. My generation has replaced it with rushing off to day-care and Nintendo madness. Please pray that our Sovereign Lord will give strength to the remnant of his elect in Canada.

Each time I read The Record I felt I must write and say how pleased I am you (Hans Kouwenberg) are going to be sharing in the writing in The Record.

I read with interest in The Presbyterian Record, January, 1991, that you will now be one of the contributing editors to that periodical. With your keen interest in the Renewal Fellowship, I know that your contributions will bring messages which I feel have been sadly lacking in The Record.

I am also delighted to learn that our denomination has a Renewal publication. My wife Shirley and I have been involved in the Renewal movement for twelve years especially in the Roman Catholic and the Anglican churches. I regularly receive the “Spirit Alive,” Renewal News for Presbyterian and Reformed Churches (U.S.A.). During the past few years the Lord has led me into writing articles on the faith, and you possibly may have seen one in “Glad Tidings” as I have been a contributor for the past three years.

By the way, I am a retired teacher/librarian (secondary school),  who is pursuing theological studies (part time) at Ontario Theological Seminary here in Toronto. I write as the Holy Spirit moves me and have found this new writing skill a very exciting one. I truly pray that some day the renewal of the church will become a reality, especially in the face of declining membership in the traditional churches when other faiths in the traditional churches when other faiths are challenging our Christian faith.
