Advent: Giving, Fasting, Praying while you wait . . .

By Martha G. Zimmerman. Regularly, by our actions, we tell our children what we think is important. We are living proof of what our hearts desire. There is no better example of this than in our celebrations. Our actions speak so loudly we can easily make it difficult for our children to hear what we are saying. What do you really believe about Christmas? Based on what you believe are you willing … Read more

Sing Out the Carols – People Will Love It!

By Esther and Howard Mcllveen. Carolling isn’t as popular as it once was, so people treasure it even more. It can be done in shopping malls, hospitals, prisons, institutions for the aged and handicapped, or in the open air around residential areas. Advent is the only time in the year when it is culturally acceptable to “invade” a neighbourhood or place with song and greetings. One can sing about “God and sinners reconciled” and greet people without intruding or being mistaken for a sect. … Read more

    Prayer?

By David Mills. Just over two years ago, there was a significant number of people praying for me as I began the process of applying for, and being accepted on to, the heart transplant program at University Hospital, London, Ontario. After an initial heart attack on December 8th 1984, into emergency open heart surgery in September 1985 at Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, B.C., we were told the prognosis. … Read more

The Beautiful Bride: The Incarnational Aspect of Evangelism

By Mark Graham. Over the last few years, evangelism has become a priority of the Presbyterian Church in Canada and in typical Presbyterian fashion we have established the appropriate committees to deal with the problem. Of course we realize how difficult evangelism is. We live in an essentially secular society where fewer than four out of ten attend church with any regularity. … Read more

    “Good-bye” is Never Easy

By A. Donald MacLeod.  I have been called to a church in the United States. On August 31 twenty-four years of service as a minister of the Presbyterian Church in Canada will have been concluded. A retrospective review is perhaps not out of order, a chance to pause long enough for reflection and recall. … Read more
